First I created my template in In-Design, a 6”W x 9”H front and back covers with a 1”W x 9”H spine (a technique learned from Lynda.com). I then created a “Big Book” design (as referred to in Designing Book Covers Hands-on Workshop) for my front cover. By using the “Big Book” look I have managed to make the title pop which will in turn draw my audience’s eye to view it first. The title was accomplished by using the hand-drawn type tool in Illustrator, a technique learned from lynda.com. The base color for the front, spine, and back cover ties in with the title of the book. I used a picture of the instrument that my featured artist (Bonnie Raitt) uses, from the Guitars and Effects website. I then cropped the photo and used some effects such as; color overlay, satin and drop shadow. I developed my own publishing logo which is a guitar pick with the first initial of my last name on it, to place on the spine. I also tried a “Big Book” technique on the back cover by adding the strip of texture to the middle of the back of the book.
So first I developed a template in In-Design, and then created the cover in Illustration. I then continued to follow some of the new techniques I learned on lyndia.com which was to place the full cover layout into the In-Design template. I then used the “export” command to turn the pages into JPEG’s, so I could load them to the web for view on my blog.
Hope you enjoy!
